Nature’s Vin Rules of Natural Wine

NV Rules of Natural Wine

If you’re deep into the wine industry, you might know that “natural wine” can be a fairly loaded phrase. For starters, it’s not regulated. Much like “reserve” its meaning is flexible and dependent on the winery or, in some instances, whoever is talking about and describing the wine. Additionally, and in part because it’s not regulated, there are no standards for a wine (or vineyard) to qualify as ‘natural’. That means all sorts of different wineries and winemakers have (and sometimes intentionally have NOT) described their wines as being ‘natural’.

At Nature’s Vin, we wanted to set ourselves some standards and rules for what qualifies to us as a natural wine. This keeps us honest and hopefully helps us tell you a concise and cohesive story about our values and how these wines fall in line with those values. We believe first and foremost in responsible farming practices and, to that end, our guiding principle is “Hands on in the vineyard, hands off in the cellar.”

Without further ado, we present the Nature’s Vin Rules of Natural Wine:

  1. Farm like you live there.
That means no pesticides (like RoundUp) or any other sprays that we wouldn’t want on food we were growing to eat.

  2. Just grapes please.
Wine shouldn’t be made with additives that enhance the flavor or texture of the wine. It’s grapes first and foremost, transformed into wine through science, alchemy, patience, and a lot of hard work.

  3. No mass production.
Wine shouldn’t be made in unfathomably large volumes. It should be made in small batches that are blended together so that the sum (what ends up in your bottle) is greater than the individual parts. Much like your favorite dish to cook at home or a great group of friends.
